Question 522553: the shorter leg of a right triangle is 7cm less than the other leg. what is the length of the two legs if the hypotenuse is 35 cm?
Answer by mananth(16946) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Hypotenuse = 35
one leg x
other leg = x-7
Use Pythagoras theorem
x^2+(x-7)^2=35^2
x^2+x^2-14x+49=1225
2x^2-14x-1176=0
/2
x^2-7x-588=0
x^2-28x+21x-588=0
x(x-28)+21(x-28)=0
(x-28)(x+21)=0
take the positive value x=28 one leg
other leg = 21
21^2+28^2=1225
