Question 501736: calculate the area of a right triangle whose longest side is 17 and difference between its legs is 7 ?
Answer by mananth(16946) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let one side be x
other side = x-7
x^2+(x-7)^2=17^2
x^2+x^2-14x+49=289
2x^2-14x+49-289=0
2x^2-14x-240=0
/2
x^2-7x-120=0
x^2-15x+7x-120=0
x(x-15)+7(x-15)=0
(x-15)(x+7)=0
x= 15 which is positive
other leg = 15-7 =8
Area = 1/2 * 8*15
Area = 60 sq. units
