Using the Pythagorean Theorem, we know
c^2 = a^2 + b^2
.
c^2 = 13^2
c^2 = 169
.
a = base
a = 12
a^2 = 12^2
a^2 = 144
.
b = height
b^2 = c^2 - a^2
b^2 = 169 - 144
b^2 = 25
b = 5
.
Area = 1/2*base*height.
A = 1/2*12*5
A = 30 sq cm
.
Done.
