Question 496686: A Bamboo of 18` height is broken by wind. Its top touches the ground 6` away from the root.Find the length of the broken segment.
Answer by cleomenius(959) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
(18-x)^2 + 6^2 = x^2
-1(x-18)^2 + 6^2 = x^2
x^2 -36x + 324 + 36 = x^2
-36x = -360
x = 10. This is the part that is broken off by the wind and will form the hypotenuse of our right triangle.
8 feet is left.
8^2 + 6^2 = 10^2
64 + 36 = 100. This does check.
