In any triangle, if you take the two shortest sides, they MUST add up to longer than the longest side.
Take a look at what you have. You definitely have sides of length 17 and 22.
If 40 could be the other side, then your two shortest should add up to longer than the longest: 17+22=39. That is NOT bigger than 40; therefore, 40 cannot be the 3rd side. The answer is A.
I'm going to go through the others, though, to make sure we're right.
If we use 21, then the two shortest are 17 and 21. 17+21=38, which is longer than 22 (the third side). 21 would work.
If we use 35, then our two shortest are 17 and 22. 17+22=39, which is bigger than 35. 35 would work.
If we use 32, then our two shortest are 17 and 22. 17+22=39, which is bigger than 32. 32 would work.
We were right--A (40) is the one that doesn't work.
