Question 315207: If the perimeter of a triangle is a+b+c, then the perimeter of an isosceles triangle should be 2a+b. If the perimeter of an isosceles triangle equals 14 feet, then 2a+b=14. If we solve for b, then b=14-2a. Possible solutions for the sides of this isosceles triangle suggest that a could be equal to 1,2,3 which would make b equal to 12,10,8 respectively. But sides of these measurement will not yield a triangle of any kind. Can you help me explain why/why not?
Answer by user_dude2008(1862) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
rule: triangle with sides a, b, c must satisfy inequality: a+b > c
1+1=2 < 12 ... triangle not possible
2+2=4 < 10 ... triangle not possible
3+3=6 < 8 ... triangle not possible
