in a triangle, the sum of two smaller sides must be more than the length of the longest side.
so, if it's known that the two sides of the triangle are 12 miles and 19 miles, and the third side t is unknown, then there is 2 possibilities:
1. t is the shortest side, so:
t + 12 > 19
t > 19 - 12
t > 7
2. t is the longest side, so:
12 + 19 > t
31 > t
so,the answer is: 7 miles < t < 31 miles (second answer)
