If a 50 foot tall flagpole casts a shadow that is 40 feet long at the same time that a person
casts a shadow 11 feet long, how tall is the person (to two decimal places)?
the pole, the person, and shadows create similar triangles, and lengths of the corresponding sides of the similar triangles are in proportion
let P be person
pole/person = pole shadow/person shadow
50/P = 40/11
50 = (40/11) * P
50 * 11 = 40 * P
550 = 40P
13.75 feet = P , that is one tall person
