Question 245692: The shortest side of an isosceles triangle is 23 cm less than twice as long as the other sides. The perimeter of the triangle is 41 cm. Find the lengths of the three sides

An isosceles triangle has two sides that are equal.
so the perimeter=2L+B where L=equals one of the equal sides and b= the base
2L+B=41 cm.
B=2L-23cm.
so we can substitute 2L-23 for B
2L+2L-23=41
4L-23=41
add 23 to both sides
4L=64
divide both sides by 4
L=16
B=2L-23
B=2*(16)-23
B=32-23
B=9
So we have 16 cm., 16 cm. , and 9 cm.
check
16+16+9=41
41=41
