Think of two sticks 400mm and 250mm long. What lengths could a third stick have if you can make a triangle with the three sticks?

The third stick would have to be more than 150mm long; if it were anything less, it plus the 250mm would be less than 400mm, and you couldn't make a triangle.

And the third stick couldn't be more than 650mm long, because then the 400mm and 250mm sticks would be less than the length of the third stick, and again you couldn't make a triangle.
