A hot air balloon is flying at an altitude of 1500m.
The angle of depression from the balloon to a landmark on the ground is 34 degrees What is the balloon's horizontal distance to the landmark to the nearest metre?
:
The angle from the vertical altitude (1500m) to the angle of depression
90 - 34 = 56 degrees
The side (s) opposite this angle is the horizontal distance to the landmark
Use the tangent of 56 degrees; side opposite/side adjacent
tan(56) =
s = tan(56) * 1500
s = 2224 meters
