Maybe you mean to ask this differently? Try drawing a RECTANGLE. Push one side (try a top side) a small measure in either direction along itself to form a PARALLELOGRAM. The area is the same as that of the original rectangle, base b multiplied by height h, or . The height of the rectangle and of the parallelogram are still the same. The bases are still the same.

Pick two opposite corners of the parallelogram, and cut into the two triangles which make up this parallelogram. Both triangles together have area ; but the two triangles are congruent, meaning same shape and size. EACH triangle then has HALF of the area of the parallelogram. This area of ONE triangle is therefore .
