How about multiplying the first eq. by (-3) and adding to the second to eliminate .
Then use either equation to solve for .
You could also have reduced first.
Divide both sides by 2.
Divide both sides by 4.
Answer by mxgirl22(39) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
1.) (4x+2y=66)
2.) (12x+8y=220)
I'm assuming you mean solve for x and y.
1st) I can see x's will be easy to cancel out. So use -3 to make 4x into -12x. You need to multiply everything in equation 1.) by -3.
1.) -3(4x+2y=66)
2.) (12x+8y=220)
------------------
-12x-6y=-198 <---This will be your new #1
--------------------------------------------------
2nd) Combine.
1.) -12x-6y=-198
2.) 12x+8y=220
------------------
2y=22
2y/2=22/2
y=11 <----- Solution for y
--------------------------------------------------
3rd) Solve for x. Plug in y=11. Use one of the original equations.
1.) 4x+2y=66
4x+2(11)=66
4x+22=66
4x+22-22=66-22
4x=44
4x/4=44/4
x=11 <----- Solution for x
--------------------------------------------------
4th) Just for safety...I'm going to plug in the values I found (x=11 and y=11) into equation 2.
2.) 12x+8y=220
12(11)+8(11)=220
132+88=220
220=220
And it checks!
So answer is: x=11 and y=11
