A private airplane leaves an airport and flies due south at 192 mph. Two hours later a jet leaves the same airport and flies due south at 960 mph. When will the jet overtake the plane?

You know the distance formula, just read it carefully and THINK!

A good fact to keep in mind is:
When the jet overtakes the small plane, they will have traveled the same distance;

Let t = flying time of small plane
The large plane started 2 hrs later, therefore
(t-2) = flying time of jet

Write a distance equation
jet dist = small plane dist
960(t-2) = 192t
960t - 1920 = 192t
960t - 192t = 1920
768t = 1920
t = 1920/768
t = 2.5 hrs after the small plane departs, the jet overtakes it

We can prove that to ourselves, find the distance each plane flew
the jet travel time; 2.5 - 2 = .5hr
a distance equation for each plane
.5(960) = 480 mi
2.5(192) = 480 mi also
