Gena walked 160 feet in 40 seconds on a moving walkaway.
Against the walkaway, she was able to walk the same distance in 80 seconds.
What is the rate at which Gena walked, and what is the rate of the walkaway?
:
Let g = Gena's walking rate (ft/sec
Let w = the walkway rate
:
Write a distance equation for each scenario; dist = time * speed
:
40(g+w) = 160
and
80(g-w) = 160
we can simplify both these equations, divide the 1st one by 40, the 2nd one by 80
g + w = 4
g - w = 2
------------addition eliminates w, find g
2g = 6
g = 3 ft/sec is Gina's walking rate
and
3 + w = 4
w = 4 - 3
w = 1 ft/sec is the walkway rate
:
:
See if that flies:
40(3 + 1) = 160
and
80(3 -1) = 80
