The sum of two numbers is 40. Their difference is 8. Find the two numbers. How would I set this up to solve it?
------------
Let the numbers be "x" and "y".
EQUATION:
x+y=40
x-y=8
Add the two equations to get:
2x=48
x=24
Substitute to solve for y as follows:
24+y=40
y=16
Check in other equation, as follows:
24-18=8
8=8

Stan H.
