Question 594721: Define the variables and write the equation using the following word problem :
Martha is decorating her house. She spent a total of $48 on x plants (that cost $8 each) and y posters (that cost $12 each). When Martha gets home, she realizes that the number of posters she bought is one less than the number of plants. How many of each item did she buy?
Answer by richwmiller(17219) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
8x+12y=48
y=x-1
8x+12*(x-1)=48
8x+12x-12=48
20x=60
x=3
x-1=y=2
check
3*8+12*2=48
24+24=48
48=48
ok
