Question 577326: If X*Y=42 and X+Y=17, what are the values of X & Y?
Thank you
Answer by richard1234(7193) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Two ways to do it:
Recognize that 42 = 14*3 and 14+3 = 17. Therefore X and Y are 14 and 3.
The other solution is to say that
. Substituting into the first equation you will get
. Solve the quadratic. You should get X = 3 or X = 14 (which makes sense since X and Y are symmetric and they lead to the same solution).
