6x+4y=22
2x-y=1
You have to remove either x or y from one of the equations. To do this just treat both sides of the equations the same and they will remain equal to one another still.
Here a good (but not only) way is to multiply the second equation by 3 on both sides so that now the 2 equations are:
6x+4y=22
6x-3y=3
As we know that both of these equations are the same on both sides, we can add them together and this will give another equation that is still the same on both sides, or in this case subtract. This makes sense if you think about it because all we are going to do is solve 22-6, but using the values of x any y that relates to each:
6x+4y-(6x-3y)=22-3
7y=19
so y = 19/7, or making it into whole numbers, 2 and (5/19)
From this just use one of the equations to find x, easier the better!
2x-y=1
2x=1+y (adding y to each side)
x=(1+y)/2
and using the value of y we already know,
x=
=
=
=26/14
