Some books use "Dx" and some use "h" to find the difference quotient.
I will use "h".  If your book uses "Dx" then 



Difference quotient = 

First find the term on the upper left  and simplify:






Substitute  for  and  for  in
 




Remove parentheses:



Cancel what will cancel:





Factor h out of the top:



Cancel the h's
