What two numbers when multiplied together will yield -8 but when added will yield -7?
How about -8 and 1?
Then x^2 - 7x - 8 = 0 factors out to be (x + 1)(x - 8).
Now set each factor to equal zero and solve for x.
x + 1 = 0
x = -1.
x - 8 = 0
x = 8
The roots are x = -1 and x = 8.
