A helpful hint when doing these type of problems is understanding the words.
"Is" usually means "equal" and "of" means "multiply".
Let x represent one number and the other number will be 3/5x. Here's the equation.
x + 3/5x = 46/5 Multiply everything by 5 to get rid of the fractions. It'll be:
5x + 3x = 46 Combine like terms will give us:
8x = 46 Divide both sides by 8 will be:
x = 46/8 or reduced to 23/4
There we go, the number is 23/4.
