Question 243141: identify the variable and write an equation that describes the situation: gwen sold her car on consignment for x dollars. the sales woman's commision was 10% of the selling price and gwen received $6570.

car is sold for x dollars
sales woman's commission was 10% of the sale price which made it .1*x
gwen gets .9x
gwen received 6570
.9x = 6570
x = 6570/.9 = 7300
the car sold for 7300
the sales lady took out 10% which means she received 730.
gwen got 7300 - 730 = 6570
I believe the variable you are looking for is x which is the selling price of the vehicle.
the equation for what gwen got would be:
6570 = (1-.10)*x
this makes the the equation for the selling price of the vehicle to become:
x = 6570/(1-.10) = 6570 / .9
6570/.9 = 7300
