Since the sum is negative at least one of the numbers will be negative
x> y
x=10+2y
x+y=-8
x=-8-y
-8-y=10+2y
add y to both sides
-8=10+3y
subtract 10 from both sides
-18=3y
divide both sides
by 3
-6=y
y=-6
x=-8-(-6)
x=-8+6
x=-2
x=10+2y
check
-2=10+(-12)
-2=10-12
-2=-2
