Tyrone is twice as old as his daughter. In six years Tyrone's age will be three times what his daughter's age was six years ago. How old are they at present?

Let t = Ty's present age
Let d = daughter's present age

Write an equation for each statement:

"Tyrone is twice as old as his daughter."
t = 2d
:
"In six years Tyrone's age will be three times what his daughter's age was six years ago."
t + 6 = 3(d - 6)
t + 6 = 3d - 18
t = 3d - 18 - 6
t = 3d - 24

From the 1st statement, replace t with 2d in the above equation
2d = 3d - 24
+24 = 3d - 2d
d = 24 yrs is daughter's present age
then, obviously, 48 yrs is Ty's age

48 + 6 = 3(24 - 6)
