x is the number of quarts that gwen picked.
x + 8 is the number of q8uarts tht roger picked.
x + x + 8 = 178
combine like term to get 2x + 8 = 178.
subtract 8 from both sides of the equation to get 2x = 170.
solve for x to get x = 85.
that's how many quarts of berries that gwen picked.
roger picked 85 + 8 = 93.
93 + 85 = 178
solution is gwen picked 85.
