a + b = 20
The difference between three times the first number and twice the second is 40.
3a - 2b = 40
What are the two numbers?
Multiply the 1st equation by 2, add to the 2nd equation
2a + 2b = 40
3a - 2b = 40
----------------addition eliminates b, find a
5a + 0 = 80
a = 80/5
a = 16
find b
16 + b = 20
b = 20 - 16
b = 4
