The SA of the sphere before the cuts is 4pi*r^2 = 4pi*a^2
----
Cutting it into 2 pieces exposes 2 circles each with an area of pi*a^2
--------------
Cutting it a 2nd time exposes 2 more circles.
Total = 4pi*a^2 + 2pi*a^2 + 2pi*a^2
= 8pi*a^2
