Question 970701: If the surface area of a shere is increased by 44%,find the percentage increase in its diameter.
Answer by Boreal(15235) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Area = 4 pi *r^2
1.44 area=4 pi *R^2
Ratio of second to first
1.44= (R/r)^2, where R is the new radius.
1.44 r^2+ R^2
Take the square root of both sides
1.2 r=R
Diameter=2r=2.4, but it is still a 20% increase, since radius and diameter are linearly related.
Percentage of increase of diameter is 20%
