Question 934386: Hello. I have a question on my study guide that I can't answer (because math is my most complicated subject and I am very confused). I have a final tomorrow and my teacher hasn't gone over this question yet. "The length of a photograph is 4 in. greater than its width. The area of the photograph is 52 1/4 in.^2. What are the dimensions of the photograph?"
Answer by mananth(16946)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
width = x
length =x+4 in
Area = L*w
Area = 52 1/4 = 209/4
x(x+4) = 209/4
x^2+4x = 209/4
x^2+4x+4 = 209/4 +4
(x+2)^2= 225/4
(x+2)= +/-(15/2)
x+2 = +/- 7.5
x= 7.5-2 = 5.5
ignore negative value
width = 5.5 in
length = 9.5 in
