x, the side of one of the squares
y, the side of the other square

First condition:

Second condition:

Solving the two equations for x and y is arithmetic using variables. Simplify the perimeter sum equation and solve it for one of the variables; and substitute this into the area sum equation; solve for the value of the single variable, and then use the result in the perimeter sum equation for the value of the other variable.

One side of 1st square: x
Area of 1st square:
One side of 2nd square: y
Area of 2nd square:
Sum of their areas is , so: ------ eq (i)
Sum of the lengths of a side of each square is 10, so: x + y = 10____y = 10 - x ------ eq (ii)
------- Substituting 10 - x for y in eq (i)

(x - 7)(x - 3) = 0
OR
If x = 7, then y = 3
If x = 3, then y = 7
However, since y > x, then the latter is the correct choice.
