Question 864416: Three rectangular prisms have a combined volume of 518 cubic feet. Prism A has one-third the volume of Prism B, and prism B and C have equal volume. What is the volume of each prism?

Let x = volume of prism B and C, so the volume of prism A is x/3. Add up the 3 volumes and set it equal to 518. Then solve for x.

x/3 + x + x = 518

x/3 + 2x = 518

3(x/3 + 2x) = 3*518

x + 6x = 1554

7x = 1554

x = 1554/7

x = 222

-------------------------------------------------------

x = 222

x/3 = 222/3 = 74

-------------------------------------------------------

Volume of Prism A: 74 cubic feet

Volume of Prism B: 222 cubic feet

Volume of Prism C: 222 cubic feet
