Whether or not the number is correct, the answer you gave is indeed wrong because area is measured in square feet. Secondly, the total area is the area of the two bases plus the circumference of one of the bases times the height. If the diameter of the base is 1, then the radius is 1/2 and the area of one base is
( remember, you will need two of these), then the circumference of the base is 1 times
, so the area of the side surface is 2.75 times
. Add up the three pieces and leave the answer in terms of
unless your instructor gave you a specific value to use for
, in which case use that value for
but since the least precise measurment given is the diameter of the base and that precision is to the nearest whole foot, you need to round your answer to the nearest whole square foot.

One cylinder with a diameter of 1 foot and a height of 2.75ft. Solve for total surface area.
I estimated to be 15.75ft.
==============================
Total surface area = side area + top area + bottom area.
------
Perimeter = pi*d = pi feet
radius = 1/2 feet
area of base = area of top = pi(1/2)^2 = (1/4)pi sq ft
------
Total surface area = 2.75*pi + (1/4)(pi) + (1/4)pi = 3.25pi sq. ft.
