Question 593045: I am building a box. I know the area of each side of a rectangular box is 252, 168 and 96. The total surface area is 2(252 +168 + 96)=1,032. How can I find the dimensions of the l,w,and h. Since I know the surface area of each side I came up with the following: l*w=252, l*h=168, w*h=96. Would I start by solving for l as in l=252/w and then substitute it into the next equation as (252/w)h=168. This is when I get confused.

You started on the right track.

Solve the first two for and the third one for

Use this expression for in the second expression that is equal to

Simplify:

Now that you have two expressions involving that are equal to , set them equal to each other:

Cross-multiply:

You should be able to handle it from here, n'est-ce pas?
