1 square foot = (12")*(12")square inches = 144 square inches.

The above answer is not correct. I was thinking that the square was 1 foot on a side, but if the perimeter is 1 foot, then the side must measure one fourth of that, or 3 inches.
The area of a 3-inch square would be 3" X 3" = 9 square inches.
My apologies for the mistake.
