Question 44605: Question
A closed box is 135 cm long, 80 cm and 60 cm deep internally. It is to be lined on its sides and bottom with cedar veneer of negligible (what is it and what does it mean ?) Find, in square metres, the area of veneer needed.
All I know and understand from this question is :-
Volume = l x w x h = 135 x 80 x 60 = 648000
So what I supposed to do next ? Please help. Thank you.
Answer by Earlsdon(6294) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The box is to be lined (covered) with cedar (an aromatic wood having insect-repellent properties, used for lining closets and chests) veneer ( a thin layer).
Find the area, in square meters, of the cedar (of neglible thickness) needed to cover the bottom and sides of the box.
To solve this problem, you will need to find the area of the bottom and the sides of the box.
The dimensions of the box are given as:
Length = 135 cm.
Width = 80 cm.
Depth = 60 cm.
You don't need to find the volume of the box since the problem is asking for the area of the bottom and sides.
The area of the bottom is the length times the width.
Area of the bottom = 135 cm X 80 cm = 10,800 sq.cm.
The area of one side is the length times the depth.
Area of one side = 135 cm X 60 cm = 8,100 sq.cm.
But there are two such sides to the box so you would double this to get 16,200 sq.cm.
The area of one end is 80 cm X 60 cm = 4,800 sq.cm.
But there are two such ends to the box so you would double this to get 9,600 sq.cm.
Now you add up all these areas to find the total area to be covered by the cedar veneer.
Area of the bottom = 10,800 sq.cm.
Area of the sides = 16,200 sq.cm.
Area of the ends = 9,600 sq.cm.
Total area = 36,600 sq.cm.
But the problem requires the answer to be in square meters.
1 meter = 100 cm ...Square both sides.
1 sq. meter = 10,000 sq.cm.
So, divide 36,600 sq. cm. by 10,000 sq.cm per sq.meter. to get 3.66 sq. meters.
You will need 3.66 sq. meters of cedar veneer to cover the bottom and sides of the box.
