Question 42076: Question
A rectangular water tank of length 60 cm and width 40 m contains water up to a depth of 30 cm. A piece of ice measuring 20 cm by 15 cm by 12 cm is dropped into the tank of water. Calculate the new depth of water when the ice melts completely, assuming its volume decreases by 1/10.
Please help. Thank you very much.

Before ice was dropped, volume of water in the reserviour = xx
= 60 x 40 x 30 cc
= 72000 cc.
Volume of the piece of ice, V = 20 x 15 x 12 = 3600 cc.
After, ice melts its volume decreases by th of its initial volume.
So volume of water formed after it melts = = = = 3240 cc.
Thus the total volume of water in the reserviour, finally, = 72000 + 3240 = 75240 cc.
Now, height of the water level = (Volume of water in reserviour)/(Length x Width).
Hence, finally, the height of water level = = 31.35 cm.
