question states

multiplying both sides of the equation by 12 (so ALL denominators are 1)

The area of the rectangle is 5/12 square inches. Find the length of X if the width is 3/4 square inches.

Area = length * width
5/12 = (3/4)x
x = (5/12)/(3/4)
---
x = (5/12)*(4/3)
---
x = 20/36
----
x = 5/9 inches (length)
