the dimensions of the pool are 20 by 20 making the surface area of the pool equal to 400 square feet.

the tarp has to be longer on each side by 1 foot which means the dimensions of the pool have to be 22 by 22 making the area of the tarp equal to 484 square feet.

If you add a foot to each end of a side, then you are adding 2 feet to the length of that side.
