Question 266482: HOW TO DO SURFACE AREA ON A RECTANGULAR PRISM WHEN OVERLAPPED ? our teacher doesnt explain the formula of the rectangular prism... and doesnt know how to explain ANYTHING! i have a UNIT TEST on TUESDAY.. and i seem to understand absoloute nothing. I would prefer to ask my teacher for help... but he never demonstrates or teachees anything right.. I REALLY WANT A TUTOUR OF MY OWN OR ELSE I WILL FAIL GRADE 9 MATH.. WHEN IM A STRAIGHT A STUDENT..
Answer by JBarnum(2146)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
To find the surfice area of a rectangle prism you need to just find the area of the 6 sides and add them together.
Find the area of two sides (Length*Height)*2 sides = 2(LH)
Find the area of adjacent sides (Width*Height)*2 sides = 2(WH)
Find the area of ends (Length*Width)*2 ends = 2(LW)
Add the three areas together to find the surface area (S)

Example: The surface area of a rectangular prism 5 cm long, 3 cm. wide and 2 cm. high.
so

as far as over lapping id need to know where they are overlapped at and ofcourse the dimensions of both prisms.
but i hope this helped a little bit
