: Mrs. Sadsad has just purchased her first house. She doesn't like the carpet in her new house. She has gone to Home Depot and found some carpet she likes very much. Her budget for carpet is $1500.00. If her home is 28ft x 40ft and the carpet she likes is $9.99 per sq.yard,can she afford it? (assume that her house has no interior walls and that 28ft x 40ft is the interior dimension) This question is from textbook introductory algebra

The area is 28 x 40 = 1120 sq ft. Change this to sq yd by dividing by 9, since 1 square yard is 3 ft by 3 ft = 9 sq ft.

1120/9 = 124.45 sq. yd.

If the cost per sq yd is $9.99, multiply 124.45 x $9.99 = $1243.20, so this is within her budget! Who says "What good is math!!"
