Question 1191065: Could you please help me with this problem about area of polygon?
This is what I am unsure about - the problem doesn't specify that the opposite sides are parallel so I am not sure if it is acceptable to use area of trapezoid. Is there an alternate way to solve this if we assume that the sides are NOT parallel?
Your help is greatly appreciated!
Answer by Solver92311(821) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Since there is no formula for the area of irregular polygons with more than three sides, you must divide the figure into polygons for which there are area formulae. If the pictured polygon does not have parallel opposite sides, then the problem has no solution. You must assume that the sides are parallel so that you have a solution. Alternatively, you could take a passive-agressive strategy and assert to your instructor that there is no solution based on the fact that there is really no reason from the information given that the necessary parallelism exists.
