Think of the cylinder as a can with the top and bottom cut out and then cut down the side and flattened out. The lateral surface area of the cylinder will be a rectangle; its length will be the circumference of the cylinder and the width will be the height of the cylinder. So

surface area = (circumference of cylinder)*(height of cylinder) = (2(pi)r)*(h)
