Question 1133854: An open box with base 14 cm by 18 cm and height 9 cm (external dimensions) is constructed with all four sides and the bottom 2 cm thick. What is the total surface area of this box in square cm?
Answer by greenestamps(13200) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Bottom, exterior: 14*18
The interior dimensions of the base are each shorter by 4, because each wall is 2cm thick.
Bottom, interior: 10*14
Two long walls, exterior: 2(18*9)
Two short walls, exterior: 2(14*9)
Because the box has an open top, the interior dimensions of each wall are shorter by 4 in length but shorter only by 2 in height.
Two long walls, interior: 2(14*7)
Two short walls, interior: 2(10*7)
Do all the calculations and add them all together to find the total (exterior and interior) surface area.
