Question 1034080: A photo measures 8 in. by 10 in.Earl put it in a frame that added 2 inches to every side, Find the perimeter and total area for the photograph and frame.
Can I just change the size to 10 in. by 12 in. Would it be 44 in perimeter and 120 in area?
My book says the answer is P=52 in. and A=168 in Squared. What am I doing wrong?

You have to add two inches to EVERY side, thus an 8 X 10 photo adds 4 inches EACH to the length and width. So the new dimensions are 12 X 14, not 10 X 12---giving in a perimeter of 52 inches, and an area of 168 sq. inches!!!!

2(8)+10(2) = use your calculator
Area:
8*10 = use your calculator

Perimeter and area of the frame:
Perimeter:
2(8+2+4)+2(10+2) = 52 Why? because when you make it two inches wider you are adding 2 inches on either end. If you're having a hard time visualizing this send me an email and I'll make you a drawing.
Area for the border:
14*12 = 168
