Question 103076: This involves a circular pool. When it rains, the water falls off the top rim of the pool, splashes onto the ground and causes a muddy ring to form on the bottom of the pool wall, making it very unsightly. The pool needs to be edged with smooth stones. The pool is 27 feet in diameter. The stone buffer is to be 18 inches wide around the edge. To keep the stones contained, the area will be edged with 4x4’s. How many 4x4’s do I need? How long do you cut them? At what angle should you cut them so that they fit snuggly? The pool has 18 straight lengths that bound the upper wall of the pool. But you don’t need to put a 4x4 where the ladder on the pool is located. Home Station has 4x4x8’s on sale for $7.50, while their 4x4x12’s cost $14.75. Which would be the better deal?
---I don't care if i get the right answer....just as long as someone could possibly give me a clue of what to do...that would be great> Please help!!!

I'm not sure about a right answer, but you should be aware of several issues with the problem

an 18" ring around a 27' circular pool must be CIRCULAR to be of uniform width
...using 4x4's (which are presumably straight) means that the edging will be in the shape of a polygon
...how many sides to this polygon? 18 is hinted at (pool upper wall)
...as to the size of the polygon, is the 18" the distance to a corner or a side?

once you know the size and shape of the polygon; calculating angles, lengths, and costs is fairly straight forward
