You don't have to memorize tremendous number to master this skill.
You need one thing----prime factorization
Ex. what is the square root of 144.
Prime factorization:
144=2*72
144=2*(2*36)
144=2*2*(2*18)
144=2*2*2*(2*9)
144=2*2*2*2*3*3
144=(2^4)*(3^2)
Thus, sqrt(144)=sqrt((2^4)*(3^2))=(2^2)*3=4*3=12
