The very first step in both of these is to get everything over to one side of the equation. r^2=-r+12. r^2+r=12. r^2+r-12=0. Ultimately, the goal should be to get one of the sides to equal zero. When factoring, multiply the outside coefficients and add them together to get the coefficient in the middle. In this case, what factors of -12 add together equals +1. The answer is 4 and -3. Put an "r" in the beginning of each binomial and set it equal to zero. (r+4)(r-3)=0. Set each binomial equal to zero. r+4=0.r-3=0. Solve for r. R=-4 or 3.
