Question 739760: I don't know how to solve this. b^2-5=-8 What is the square root if it can't be negative?
Answer by Edwin McCravy(20086)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
It's imaginary! Have you studied imaginary numbers?
If you haven't, you should say this "has no REAL solutions".
But if you have studied imaginary (NON-REAL) numbers,
you should do this:

b² - 5 = -8
    b² = -3
     b = ±√-3
     b = ±i√3
