complete the square
2m^2-m-15=0
2(m^2-m/2+1/16)=15+1/8=120/8+1/8=121/8
2(m-1/4)^2=121/8
divide both sides by 2
(m-1/4)^2=121/16
take sqrt of both sides
m-1/4=±11/4
m=1/4±11/4
m=1/4+11/4=3
or
m=1/4-11/4=-10/4=-5/2=-2.5
..
using the quadratic formula
2y^2-3y-6=0
quadratic formula:
a=2, b=-3, c=-6
y={-(-3)±√(-3)^2-4*2*-6)}/(2*2)
=[3±√(9+48)]/4
=(3±√57)/4
y=(3+√57)/4
or
y=(3-√57)/4
